THE SAFETY JOINT ASSEMBLY IS A COMPACT LEFT-HAND RELEASE, WHICH ALLOWS A MINIMUM NUMBER OF TOOLS TO BE LEFT IN THE HOLE, IF IT BECOMES NECESSARY TO UNLATCH THE SAFETY JOINT.
The male and female parts of the Safety Joint are locked together by a Ratchet Ring. The Safety Joint is released with left hand rotation, which requires only 20% of the torque required to break other tool joints in the string. This feature makes it very difficult to back off unintentionally, during normal drillstem testing operations.
