Simultaneous hole enlargement with rotary steerable systems is becoming a common drilling application in offshore and deep offshore wells
While the reasons for hole enlargement might be different in each case, the challenges of determining the best tools for the application are common. As compared to conventional rotary steerable systems, drilling efficiency in simultaneous under-reaming operations might be lost because:
•BHA component reliability is generally reduced
•BHA vibration levels are increased while drilling and reaming
•Hole cleaning while tripping out takes longer and it is more difficult
•While drilling the casing shoe, drilling parameters are restricted to avoid under reamer involuntary activation
•While drilling and reaming, enlarged hole gauge on drilling parameters, formation drilled, and directional work performed
Our hole enlargement products and services are engineered to help solve these problems and restore efficiency in your drilling operation.
NBR® Tool
The Near Bit Reamer tool has borehole enlargement capabilities up to 1.2 times the pilot hole diameter. The tool is a concentric expandable reamer, which is engineered to run between the downhole motor and above the drill bit. Due to its robustness and limited moving parts, the NBR tool is the most reliable tool on the market.
The NBR tool’s concentric technology substantially reduces BHA vibration compared to eccentric tools or bi-center bits, improving steerability and stability. The greater stability of the NBR tool helps ensure a gauged hole.
TDReam™ Tool
Reducing Rathole Length While Increasing Risk Mitigation
In a traditional reaming-while-drilling BHA the reamer is placed above the RSS and LWD tools, creating a long rathole and requiring an extra trip to enlarge the hole to TD. Run in conjunction with the XR™ Reamer, the TDReam™ tool is Halliburton’s newest downhole innovation designed to significantly reduce rathole length and reach TD in one run.
XR™ Reamer Hole Enlargement Tool
XR The XR™ reamer tool is Halliburton’s premium hole enlargement tool, engineered for reliability and to minimize vibrations
Borehole enlargement while drilling with a rotary steerable system (RSS) BHA is not just about experience and cutting structure durability. Excessive vibration while drilling and reaming simultaneously can result in increased drilling costs and reduced rotary steerable system reliability and performance.
The XR reamer addresses these challenges through the adoption of unique technical innovation. These technologies include:
•Self-stabilizing body - minimizes BHA whirl, making the hole enlargement operation more efficient
•Articulated deployment - for tool reliability, durability, and hole quality
•Autoblocking - enables the use of optimum WOB while drilling as all the loads are transferred to the reamer body rather than on internal components
XR reamer tool deactivation service
The deactivation feature is an optional service with the XR reamer tool. When finished enlarging the hole, the arms/cutting structure can be closed and drilling resumed or the XR reamer tool can be pulled while simultaneously circulating at full flow rate and rotating. The deactivation service is completely safe and field proven to help improve your drilling operation.
