Fluid Sampling
Halliburton delivers advanced capabilities for performing reservoir fluids sampling services, routine laboratory services, and unconventional pressure/volume/temperature (PVT) analysis. Physical properties and chemical composition of reservoir fluids play a crucial role in all aspects of petroleum and reservoir engineering. Accurate sampling and analysis techniques provide critical input to reservoir simulation models and help to optimize processing facility designs while boosting the profitability of an oil or gas field.

Armada® Sampling System

The Armada® sampling system is Halliburton‘s next-generation tubing-conveyed fluid sampling solution designed for cased-hole environments ranging from normal to heavy/viscous to hostile. The smooth, full-bore, design allows unrestricted passage of wireline tools without damaging the samplers. The system has been specifically designed for extended service in HPHT environments while still capturing at least 80% of its full complement of representative monophasic samples. Each of the nine Inconel® samplers is rated for 400°F and 20,000 psi service and will collect a 400 cc sample which is kept monophasic by the exertion of nitrogen pressure. The Armada system design is also unique in that a single, high volume nitrogen section is used to provide the required high pressure nitrogen to the nine samplers. However, the design has considerable flexibility built in so that in actual practice anywhere from one to nine samplers can be collected, and because of the common nitrogen section, sample recovery pressure will increase as the number of samplers in service decreases.

A number of innovative features have been incorporated into the design to facilitate improved sample quality and prompt interpretation of the tools performance. For example the sample piston has a junk chamber for isolating the initial surge of potentially non-representative fluid during sample capture. The sample piston also has a position location feature imbedded in it which allows its location to be tracked by non-invasive means. Consequently, within minutes of the recovered sampler being set down on the rig floor, the client can have a reasonable understanding of the success of his sampling program.

Certain aspects of the Armada system design impart significant operational advantages. The entire sampler can be assembled at the shore base and shipped offshore with a nominal nitrogen charge. On location all that is needed is to finish charging the nitrogen sections so that within hours of getting to location, the Armada system is ready to run in the hole. After a run the nitrogen section can be isolated under pressure and set aside for a second DST as needed. The samplers are also relatively simple in design and can be quickly redressed on location. This combination makes for a very robust and reliable tool that can deliver significant savings in rig time.
